Dream Job Hunting Rule # 1: Don’t Forget to Breathe
For a lot of us, job hunting can feel like the emotional equivalent of crash landing. We panic, and brace ourselves for disaster. We grip the arm rest, assume the position, and forget to do the one thing we all need to do first in order to get out alive- -we forget to breathe.
But, as every flight attendant tells you before take off, the FIRST thing you have to do is breath. if you don’t put your own oxygen mask on first, you can’t do anything to help yourself or anybody else.
So before you begin a job hunt, the first thing you need to do is take a few deep breaths, relax, restore calmness and clarity, so that when the moment arrives, you’ll be able to effectively deal with your situation and help yourself and your family to survive intact.
Dream Job Hunting Rule #2: It Isn’t the End of the World, but a New Life Being Born
I know, nobody likes pounding the pavement, and it’s an anxious and unsettling feeling to suddenly lose your sense of career security. A job hunt though, doesn’t have to be traumatic, if you look at it the right way. In fact, this can be a time of great awakening, when you explore new options and alternatives that you might never have considered if you hadn’t been given a little shove by circumstances to break out of your comfortable box.
And at the end of your job hunt, you might come to discover that these are the moments of your life that you will always look back on and say, if not for that period in my life, I would never have found my way to the happier place I am now.
So the first thing I advise all of my clients to do when they begin a job search is to shift their perceptions a little, regain their composure and their confidence, and start to look at their job search as an opportunity to discover new things, in themselves, and in the world.
Dream Job Hunting Rule #3: Don’t Worry, Be Happy
If your instincts are telling you that you should be spending every waking hour looking for work and having absolutely no fun at all until you are gainfully employed, you need to tell your inner party poop to simmer down now. Employers like to hire happy people. They want to hire people who are vibrant, energetic, healthy, and enthusiastically engaged with their life and their work.
People want to hire people who make them feel good. If you’re run down, anxious, under served, poorly nourished, starved for enjoyment, or stressed out to the max, you are not going to seem like a person who is going to be fun to be around. You’re going to seem like what you are: a nervous wreck.
Your state of mind, your general sense of well being makes a huge difference in your success rate. Your attitude will show in everything that you say and do on an interview. This means that even though you are between jobs, you need to invest in yourself, even if you feel like you can’t afford it. And you need and take the time to do some of the things that make you feel happy, alive, well balanced, focused, and excited so that you exude health, happiness, and confidence when it comes time to pound the pavement.
